MOORING SYSTEMS : shackles +swivels

Man is always surprised how any strongly secured shackle like this one is able to undo itself underwater. It is important to remember that :
1°) eloctrolysis causes corrosion which reduces the diameter of the shackles pin + attacks the threads causing the pin to fall out.
2°) Abraison due to continuous banging off the sea floor
3°) Marine growth such as algae provides lubrication causing the pin to move inside the threads

To avoid the occurring we always use the system described below

Avoid this

Connector shackle "SP18L"

- Standard body diam.18 mm, medium grade 40 steel :
- 18x120 mm bolt in Zinc steel of the same grade
- counter Nut with securing pin or Nylstop nut

Ideal for connecting a Mooring Buoy Rod and a 14 / 18 mm mooring Riser Chain

Swivel ref N4 20 mm
Only use steel swivels, galvinised or stainless steel ones should be avoided. As soon as the swivle has lost 10% of its original diameter it should be replaced. It is normally positioned between the mooring buoy rod and the riser chain, which by the way should be checked twice yearly to make sure that it is functioning correctly.
A 28mm diameter swivel is recommended for heavy boats or yachts above 12m.

If the swivel fails to work, the riser chain will turn on itself , thus shortening overall chain length ,and will more than likely end up breaking.
